Cooke Aquaculture Dropped Fortune Plans

Cooke Aquaculture, a New Brunswick aquaculture company has decided not to process farmed salmon in a southern Newfoundland community this fall. This cancels all hopes for workers whose plant has been idle for almost three years.

According to CBC, Cooke Aquaculture cited a number of reasons - including uncertainty over the future role of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers union in the workplace - for deciding to process salmon outside of Fortune.

Cooke, which last October announced plans to raise 18,000 tonnes of salmon per year, had been interested in using the former Fisheries Products International plant in Fortune, which has been dormant since late 2004.
