BC Salmon Farmers Produced 82,000 Metric Tonnes Last Year

Most people would agree that a good job is an opportunity, especially if that job is in a sector that is growing, offers its employees opportunities for advancement and produces an environmentally sustainable product. According to a report prepared by PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP and released this week, a growing number of those jobs in British Columbia are in the salmon farming sector.

The report shows that the direct employment in salmon farming has more than doubled since the early 1990's. Today salmon aquaculture's direct, indirect and induced impacts are similar to agriculture and food processing: the industry's economic output is over CAD 800 million and the total employment over 6,000.

In addition, there are strong market prospects for the future. Production increased in 2006, up 16% over the previous year from 70,6000 metric tonnes to an estimated 82,000 metric tonnes. These jobs provide good wages and most importantly, full time year round employment means a bright future for average families in BC's coastal communities.
